Veteran commentator Andrew Castle is set to step down from the BBC’s Wimbledon coverage after this summer’s tournament, concluding his 24-year tenure with the broadcaster.
Castle expressed his disappointment at the decision, telling The Telegraph that he was “upset” to learn it would be his last year and would have preferred to continue until Wimbledon’s 150th anniversary in 2027.
He will commentate on his 23rd final as part of the BBC team this summer, having had a notable playing career that included being British No 1 in 1986 and reaching the mixed doubles final at the Australian Open.
The BBC is revamping its coverage of the prestigious tennis tournament, a process that has seen several changes in recent years, including the departure of veteran presenter Sue Barker in 2022.
Castle’s departure comes as the BBC continues to evolve its presentation of Wimbledon, despite having recently renewed its free-to-air broadcast agreement for the Championships until 2033.
