Khamzat Chimaev put his middleweight title on the line at UFC 328 in New Jersey against Sean Strickland on Saturday night.
Chimaev was making the first defence of the title he won against Dricus du Plessis last August, and was the heavy favourite going into the contest.
However, Strickland upset the odds to claim a split-decision victory after five rounds, as he became the UFC middleweight champion for the second time.
It was the first loss of Chimaev’s MMA career as he moved to 15-1, while new champion Strickland is now 31-7.
In the co-main event, Joshua Van defended his flyweight title by knocking out Tatsuro Taira in the fifth and final round.
