As temperatures continue to soar across the UK, pet owners are being reminded about the dangers heatwaves pose to dogs – but one vet said we often forget about cats. Thankfully, according to the expert, cats are generally much better at looking after themselves during hot weather compared to dogs. But that doesn’t mean owners can’t help make things a little more comfortable for them.

Sharing her advice, the vet, who is known as @cat_the_vet on TikTok, revealed four simple ways owners can help keep their feline friends cool and relaxed during the heatwave. One of her top recommendations is investing in a cooling mat, explaining that cats spend most of hot weather sleeping and lounging around. She said having something cool to lie on could make a huge difference during warmer days, even if some they decide to ignore it completely.

Another trick involves making flavoured ice cubes to encourage cats to drink more water.

Rather than using plain water, the vet suggested freezing the spring water from a tin of tuna – making sure it’s not salty brine or oil – before dropping the cubes into their water bowl throughout the day.

According to the expert, this helps keep the water cool while also making it far more appealing for fussy cats.

She also recommended frozen treats during hotter weather, revealing her own cats love frozen lickable cat treats as a way to cool down.

For long-haired cats, regular brushing can also help significantly during warmer temperatures by removing loose and dead fur trapped in thick coats.

The vet explained this can help cats feel lighter and far more comfortable when temperatures rise.

Finally, she suggested placing a fan near wherever cats usually nap so they can sleep in a cool breeze throughout the day.

However, despite all the tips, the expert stressed that cats are usually very good at regulating themselves in hot weather.

She explained that unlike dogs, it’s actually quite unusual for cats to suffer from heatstroke because they naturally slow down, rest more and seek cooler spaces themselves.

The video quickly sparked discussion among cat owners, many of whom admitted their pets had completely ignored expensive cooling products.

One person said: “I got them a cooling mat, do they use it? Nah, the bath is better.”

Another owner revealed their cat had developed a new heatwave habit.

“Ever since the heat rose my cat has become accustomed to screaming until I turn on the tap for her,” they joked.

Meanwhile, another viewer admitted their cat rejected both a cooling mat and water fountain but happily settled for a cold wet flannel instead.

As temperatures continue climbing this summer, the vet said small changes can help keep cats more comfortable – even if many of them still insist on doing things entirely their own way.
