Trump-backed challenger defeats Massie in GOP primary
Trump urges voters to oust Thomas Massie in record-breaking Kentucky battle
Representative Thomas Massie lost his primary election in Kentucky’s 4th district to Republican challenger Ed Gallrein.
The election outcome followed a period of Massie clashing with Donald Trump on various issues, including spending, tax cuts and the release of Jeffrey Epstein files.
Trump actively endorsed Gallrein, publicly criticized Massie, and dispatched Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to campaign for Gallrein.
Massie, a libertarian Republican, had notably teamed with a Democrat to force a vote on releasing Epstein-related files, which passed almost unanimously.
This defeat is presented as another instance in Trump’s ongoing “revenge tour” against Republican figures he perceives as disloyal, reinforcing the expectation of loyalty within the party.
