Three dead, 15 suspects arrested in Edo violence

A personnel member of the Edo State Security Corps, Martins Enahoro, and two others have been confirmed dead in violence that erupted in different parts of the state.
This was contained in a statement released on Monday by the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Eno Ikoedem.
She stated that 15 suspects were arrested, while those who were injured in the violence were also receiving treatment in different hospitals.
The statement reads, “The Edo State Police Command wishes to update members of the public on two separate security incidents recorded on Sunday, 23rd August 2026, in Sobe and Ewatto, involving attacks on security personnel and other persons.
“At about 10:00hrs, one Ojo Gabriel ‘M’ of Atoruru Village reported a case of assault occasioning harm and malicious damage at Sobe Division following an attack by youths who damaged the window glass of his residence and vehicles.
“Police detectives and personnel of the Edo State Security Corps were immediately mobilised to the scene. However, upon sighting the security personnel, the youths attacked them, damaging the side glass of the Police patrol vehicle and assaulting members of the Edo State Security Corps. Two locally-made single-barrel guns belonging to the security personnel were also taken away.
“Three ESSC personnel, namely Tunde Ali, Izedu Monday and Charles Ighororo, sustained serious injuries and are receiving medical treatment.
“During the confrontation, three unidentified youths sustained pellet injuries, while one was later confirmed dead while receiving treatment at David and Stella Hospital, Sabongida-Ora. His remains have been deposited at Heavenly Home Mortuary, Sabongida-Ora, while efforts are ongoing to establish his identity and contact his family.
“Eleven suspects have so far been arrested in connection with the incident, and the guns have been recovered. Security has been reinforced in the area by Police and Military personnel, and normalcy has been restored.
The statement continued, “In a separate incident at Ewatto, at about 12:20hrs on the same date, the Command received a distress call reporting an attack on an Edo State Security Network personnel, Martins Enahoro, by suspected members of the Aro Berger confraternity, including persons popularly known as Gbozia and Gezo (surnames unknown), among others.
“A preliminary investigation revealed that during the confrontation, the ESSN personnel Martins Enahoro, while attempting to defend himself, stabbed one of the attackers identified as Gbozia. Enahoro subsequently sustained multiple cut injuries. Both men were rushed to God’s Will Hospital, Ewohimi, where they were confirmed dead by the doctor on duty and their remains deposited at the mortuary pending further investigation.
“Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the incidents, two of whom have confessed to belonging to Vikings and Aiye confraternities. All suspects have been transferred to the Area Command Headquarters for further investigation, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing suspects.”
The statement added that the Command has deployed Police Mobile Force, Squadron 82, as reinforcement to the area and assures members of the public that investigations into both incidents are ongoing, warning that attacks on security personnel are criminal offenses and will not be tolerated.
The Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, Patrick Daaor, also urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding and to provide the police with useful information that could assist the ongoing investigations.
He reiterated the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring that anyone found culpable is made to face the law.
