Tesco has extended its popular Clubcard loyalty scheme to 16 and 17-year-olds, granting younger shoppers access to exclusive discounts and loyalty points for the first time.

The UK’s largest supermarket confirmed that the new digital Clubcard will enable members to accrue points, redeemable as vouchers for savings at the till.

This initiative follows criticism from consumer groups, who argued that age restrictions on loyalty programmes unfairly excluded younger customers from accessing reduced grocery prices.

Exclusively digital, the Clubcard for this age group can only be accessed via the Tesco app or its official website. Enrolment requires an invitation from a parent or guardian’s existing Clubcard account.

Tesco Group membership and loyalty director Shama Wilson said: “We are delighted to be giving younger customers access to Tesco Clubcard for the first time, and we have no doubt that it will prove popular with 16 and 17-year-olds, whether they are shopping in one of our ‘big Tesco’ or ‘little Tesco’ stores.

“From today, our new Clubcard for 16-17s members will not only be able to get Clubcard prices in-store, including our iconic Tesco lunchtime meal deal for just £3.85, but also collect points that they can turn into vouchers for money off their in-store shopping.”

The UK’s biggest supermarket said the Clubcard for 16-17s will also allow members to collect points that can be converted into vouchers for money off at the checkout

Tesco said the easiest way to access the Clubcard for 16-17s is for a parent or guardian to click on the identity icon in the top corner of their Tesco app, which allows them to access their account settings.

From there they can click on the “invite to Clubcard” button and choose the option to send a sign-up link to the teenager.

More than 24 million UK households are signed up to Tesco Clubcard, which has been running for more than 30 years.

A Clubcard is used in more than 80 per cent of sales at Tesco, according to the supermarket’s figures.

Grocery price inflation slowed again this month, easing concerns about the impact of the Middle East conflict filtering through to supermarket shelves.

Supermarket prices were 3 per cent higher than a year ago in June, down from May’s 3.1% and April’s 3.8 per cent, figures from Worldpanel by Numerator show.

The period coincided with the UK’s hottest May day on record, which saw suncare sales increase by 128 per cent, sales of fresh beef burgers rise 40 per cent and sales of fresh prepared salads and chilled dips rise 13 per cent.

Tesco, the UK’s largest grocer, now holds 28 per cent market share with sales up 1.2 per cent.
