Manchester United are under no illusions that their squad will need strengthening ahead of next season. While Michael Carrick turned the ship around in the second half of the campaign, he had the luxury of just the Premier League to focus on.

After securing the return of Champions League football to Old Trafford, his squad will need reinforcing. And signings could be made all over the pitch.

Midfield additions are being worked on as a priority, but attention is already starting to turn to the defence. Here, Mirror Football looks at the latest surrounding the Red Devils.

Luke Shaw started all 38 league games this season, all the more impressive given his injury history. But with Patrick Dorgu now considered an option further forward and Tyrell Malacia released, a new left-back is required.

According to The Athletic, one of the options United are considering to fill that void is Newcastle’s Lewis Hall. The Chelsea academy product has become one of the standout performers at St James’ Park.

It therefore came as a surprise to many when Thomas Tuchel left him out of his England squad for the World Cup, with Djed Spence instead making the cut as back-up to Nico O’Reilly. Hall is tied down until 2029 in the north east.

That’s why the report suggests any move this summer could cost at least £50million, if not more. But that could be a worthwhile investment for a 21-year-old who has already established himself as one of the top left-backs in the Premier League.

One of United’s targets in the middle of the park is Mateus Fernandes, who had another impressive campaign despite suffering his second successive Premier League relegation after joining West Ham from Southampton last summer.

Another 21-year-old with huge potential means another sizeable price tag. The Times claim that despite their drop to the Championship, the Hammers will seek £80m for his services.

Whether that will put United off remains to be seen. Arsenal also hold an interest in the versatile Portuguese midfielder and could battle United, although it’s believed he favours a move to Old Trafford.
