Liverpool find themselves in the unfamiliar position of picking up the pieces following the sacking of Arne Slot. The Reds had only sacked five managers, prior to Slot, since the turn of the 21st century.
The post-mortem is now underway, with fans and pundits alike sharing their thoughts on how Slot managed to find himself out of work a year after winning the Premier League title.
Today’s Liverpool latest sees a former Red share his thoughts on the situation. Elsewhere, a decision has been made about another star linked with the exit door.
Reds icon Carragher was taken aback by Slot’s sacking and believes the blame for the entire saga rests on the shoulders of several culprits.
He told Sky Sports: “I was torn on Arne Slot, I must say, I would’ve backed any decision and I can see both sides of the argument but an elite football manager finds a way to fix Liverpool to make it better but he wasn’t helped with recruitment, have anyone of them done well?

“You could put that on the manager, does he need to get more out of them? Should them players have done more? Yes. Should the people above him give him a better squad? Yes. There’s a lot of people to point fingers at.”
He added: “There is no doubt that he lost supporters, I think that was harsh on the back of what happened 12 months before. Supporter base has a huge influence, when you talk about player power, that can’t have helped with Salah. I’m not happy with that, I don’t ever want Liverpool Football Club to have player power to speak out about a manager who won the Premier League.
“What manager does it help when a star player comes out publicly criticising the manager, that shouldn’t happen no matter the situation. Maybe it’s forced the clubs’ hand.

“I don’t know what goes on in the dressing room, I didn’t like Mo Salah’s post, I didn’t think he should come out publicly. Who does get on with every manager? Players have lots of different managers but you don’t go out on social media and do it publicly or put clapping emojis when someones having a go at your own manager. That probably tells you what’s going on in the Liverpool dressing room right now.”
Carragher added that Liverpool’s next manager will be expected to win the league title, but worries that juggling a huge number of games per season may not be the ideal fit for some of the candidates supposedly in the frame for the job.
“My worry is can you play at that intensity when you’re playing every three days? Whenever you bring in a manager for a top club at England, can they win the league? Liverpool had a manager who won the league, that’s why I was always torn, whoever comes in is a risk but Liverpool did have a manager who won the league.”
According to The Athletic, Joe Gomez will be staying at Anfield to see out the final year of his contract, therefore departing next year instead of this. The long-serving defender joined the Reds in 2015 but was of interest to AC Milan last summer and Newcastle United in 2024.
The centre-back was close to leaving the Reds on transfer deadline day last year but stayed at the club after a deal for Marc Guehi, then of Crystal Palace, broke down. The versatile 29-year-old made just six Premier League starts this term, however.
Asked about his future at the end of the season, Gomez said: “I don’t know is the honest answer. I’ve only got a year left on my contract, so I don’t know. Whatever’s meant to be will be, but I’m so grateful to have had this time here at this club.”

The call will be somewhat of a relief for Reds fans after the news that Ibrahima Konate will leave Liverpool this summer rocked Anfield. The 27-year-old centre-back will follow Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson out the Anfield exit after failing to agree a new deal.
Konate was pivotal to Liverpool’s title in 2024/2025 and also won two League Cups and the FA Cup during his time at Anfield. They do have options in defence, however.
Liverpool can anticipate the arrival of France Under-21 international Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes this summer, after he signed for £60million in January. Giovanni Leoni, whose first season at Anfield was curtailed by an ACL injury, is also expected to play a big part once he’s fit.
