Inmates at the Bertie-Martin Regional Detention Center in Windsor, North Carolina, overpowered correctional staff and seized parts of the facility early Monday morning.
The takeover began around 5 a.m. with three guards and 88 inmates inside, resulting in two guards being taken captive while a third escaped.
Negotiations led to the release of 18 inmates and the two captive guards around 9:30 a.m., with officials stating the guards were released “without further injury.”
Another large group of inmates was released shortly after, though the exact number remaining in the jail was not specified by authorities.
Local, state, and federal authorities responded to the incident, establishing a secure perimeter and assuring the public there was no immediate threat.
