  • Summer-like temperatures are set to make a brief return across the UK on Sunday, with a southerly wind drawing in warm, humid air from the continent.
  • Parts of south-east and central-southern England as well as the Welsh marches could see peak temperatures reaching 28C, while northern regions will experience highs in the low 20s.
  • The unseasonable warmth is expected to be short-lived, with cooler, changeable weather returning on Monday alongside rain moving southeastwards across the country.
  • This brief heat spell follows confirmation from the Met Office that the UK has provisionally recorded its hottest summer since records began nearly 150 years ago, with a mean average temperature of 16.5C.
  • The record-breaking summer season featured five distinct heatwaves that triggered widespread drought and travel disruption, peaking at 38.1C at Kew Gardens on 13 August.
