Summer might be winding down, but there’s one seasonal pest pet owners shouldn’t be letting their guard down against: the flea. The warmer months are when fleas become a problem, with the rise in temperatures creating the ideal conditions for them to thrive and reproduce.
And while spotting a flea on your cat or dog might seem like a minor nuisance, parasites can cause more than just an itchy bite. Fleas can make pets uncomfortable and, if left unchecked, an infestation can quickly become difficult to manage.
What are signs your pet has fleas?
For pets, an infestation can be more than just an annoyance. According to vet Dr Sarah Endersby, global technical manager for behaviour at Ceva Animal Health, some of the signs to look out for include “increased scratching, restlessness, loss of appetite, lethargy, or mood changes.”
How to protect your pets from fleas and ticks
The good news is that there are simple ways for owners to reduce the risk. “Regular care, prevention, and simple routines can significantly reduce risks and help pets stay healthier and safer,” says Endersby.
Prevention and early detection are key, she adds, with pet owners playing an important role alongside their vets. She recommends speaking to a vet about the most appropriate preventative treatment for your pet, as well as checking their skin regularly for ticks after outdoor activities, particularly around the armpits, groin, ears and between the toes. Keeping outdoor spaces well maintained and disposing of pet waste responsibly can also help reduce exposure to parasites and limit their spread.

When it comes to flea treatments, she recommends taking a proactive approach, explaining: “The most successful prevention plans are proactive, consistent, and tailored to each pet’s individual lifestyle and exposure risk.” She adds: “As with any medication, responsible use of antiparasitic treatments is crucial to prevent drug resistance, and veterinary professionals play a key role in guiding and monitoring their appropriate use.”
