The Ogun State Government has activated emergency environmental and public health response measures following a chemical odour incident that reportedly affected more than 90 students in Ijebu Ode.

The development was disclosed in a statement shared on the official account of the Ogun State Government.

According to the statement, the incident occurred barely one month after a similar outbreak was reported in the area and affected students from schools including Our Lady of Apostles Girls School, Anglican Girls Grammar School, Ijebu-Ode Grammar School and Sambadola Private School.

The government stated that several affected students were taken to health facilities after reportedly complaining of abdominal pain and related symptoms.

Top government officials, including the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, reportedly visited some of the affected students receiving treatment and urged residents to remain calm as investigations continue.

Speaking on the development, the General Manager of the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency OGEPA, Kehinde Bello, disclosed that the state’s Air Quality Monitoring Device installed at Ijebu Ode Grammar School detected elevated methane gas concentrations within parts of the affected area.

According to Bello, the device recorded peak methane readings of about 13,500 parts per million ppm in surrounding locations.

He stated that although the concentration remains below the lower explosive limit, the level is considered environmentally significant and requires immediate technical investigation and precautionary measures.

The statement added that the state government has activated a multi-agency response team involving environmental regulators, emergency officials, public health experts and air quality specialists to investigate the source of the odour.

Residents were also advised to avoid open flames or ignition sources in areas with unusual gas odours and report symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, headaches or breathing discomfort to nearby medical facilities.

“The Ogun State Government reiterated its commitment to protecting public health, environmental safety, and the wellbeing of residents,” the statement read.
