A contributor on Trading Places was suddenly taken to hospital during the most recent episode.

The new Channel 5 series charts the journey of a group of youngsters as they are removed from their familiar surroundings and thrown into entirely different lives.

“This enthralling and provocative ‘fish-out-of-water’ format follows groups of three young people per episode as they are taken out of their existing lives and plunged into an immersive, week-long, 24/7 experience inside one of four extraordinary and revealing worlds – worlds with clear expectations of behaviour, exacting standards and a way of life radically different from their own,” the broadcaster said of the four-part series.

The most recent episode aired on Sunday (May 24), and followed three young partygoers as they abandoned their hedonistic lifestyles to spend a week alongside Carmelite friars at a secluded Oxfordshire priory, reports the Express.

23-year-olds Max and Luke, alongside 24-year-old Alan, were swiftly immersed in a demanding routine of silence, prayer and physical labour.

Max, Luke and Alan initially found the early mornings, lack of mobile phones and lengthy periods of contemplation difficult, but gradually began experiencing moments of genuine honesty and surprising togetherness with the brothers.

Later, one of the brothers sent the trio on a secret mission. Max, Luke and Alan made their way to a soup kitchen, where they assisted the proprietor, Gary, in preparing meals for Oxford’s homeless community.

“My mum started it. She just felt in her heart to just cook for people, and that’s what she’s been doing from when she was young. And that’s for you guys to know that life isn’t just you; life is bigger than what you think it is,” Gary explained.

After preparing the food, the boys returned to the priory, before reconnecting with Gary the next day. Yet, when Max, Luke and Alan turned up at the soup kitchen, they were instead met by Gary’s wife, Yvonne, who delivered some unfortunate news.

“Today Gary’s been rushed into hospital. He’s been having some chest pains, we had to get the ambulance out to him,” she disclosed. “Sorry to hear that,” responded Luke, with Alan remarking: “Hope you’re all good.”

Yvonne went on: “We’ve still got lots to prepare, so we’re gonna need your help to do as good of a standard as Gary would normally do it.”

“Lets do it for Gary!” the boys then declared, just moments before the soup kitchen welcomed visitors for the day.

Later, the programme’s narrator provided an encouraging update regarding Gary’s health, stating: “There’s good news from the hospital. Gary’s on the mend.”

Max then commented: “Fingers crossed that Gary makes a recovery, but hopefully, yeah, we made him proud in the kitchen today with Yvonne, and everything went to plan.”
