Osun warns residents of heavy rain, flash floods, windstorm risks

The Osun State Government has issued a public warning to residents across the state over an increased risk of heavy rainfall, flash flooding, windstorms, and other extreme weather conditions expected during the ongoing rainy season.
The warning was contained in a statement on Monday signed by the Director-General and Special Envoy to the Governor on Climate Change and Renewable Energy, Prof. Chinwe Obuaku, following meteorological forecasts and environmental observations indicating heightened risks across several communities.
According to the government, the forecast points to intense rainfall that could trigger flooding, erosion, property damage, and disruptions to transport and daily activities if precautionary steps are not taken urgently.
Residents in flood-prone and low-lying areas, including riverbank communities and locations with poor drainage systems, were urged to remain on high alert and take immediate preventive actions.
“Recent meteorological forecasts and environmental observations indicate that Osun State may experience episodes of intense rainfall capable of causing flooding in vulnerable communities,” the statement said.
The government warned that such weather conditions could result in multiple hazards, stressing that early action by residents remains critical in reducing risks.
“Residents living in flood-prone areas, riverbank communities, low-lying environments, and locations with poor drainage systems are particularly advised to exercise maximum caution,” it added.
As part of its directives, the state government instructed residents to clear blocked drainage channels, avoid dumping refuse in waterways, and ensure proper waste disposal practices to prevent water obstruction.
“Desist from dumping refuse in drains, canals, and water passages,” the statement said, while also urging residents to “avoid movement during heavy downpours unless absolutely necessary.”
The government further cautioned against exposure to floodwaters and unstable infrastructure during storms.
“Stay away from flooded roads, bridges, and fast-moving water,” it warned, adding that residents should also secure rooftops, trees, electric poles, signboards, and other weak structures against strong winds.
It also urged parents and guardians to take additional precautions during rainfall periods, especially regarding children’s safety.
“Closely monitor children during periods of rainfall and thunderstorms,” the statement added, alongside a call for immediate reporting of flooding, erosion, or drainage blockages to relevant authorities.
The government noted that emergency response agencies have been placed on alert to respond to any incidents, while stressing that prevention remains the most effective safety measure.
Relevant agencies, it said, have been directed to intensify monitoring and response efforts across the state as weather conditions evolve.
“The Osun State Government will not tolerate activities that worsen environmental hazards, including indiscriminate waste disposal and blockage of drainage systems,” it further warned.
Residents were urged to comply fully with the advisory, with the government stressing that collective responsibility is essential to reduce the impact of possible flooding and wind-related incidents across Osun State.
