Burnham says no to snap election and Scottish independence vote
- New Prime Minister Andy Burnham has ruled out calling a snap general election, saying that it would hinder the “essential work” of implementing Labour’s 2024 manifesto.
- He officially opened “No 10 North”, a new government headquarters in Manchester, where he plans to work weekly to decentralise power from Westminster, on Friday.
- Mr Burnham expressed his ambition to “get Britain hoping again” and ensure “good growth” across all parts of the country, saying that No 10 North is for the entire UK.
- He also met with Scottish First Minister John Swinney, informing him that another independence referendum is “off limits”.
- The prime minister also held discussions with Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth, who advocated for increased devolved powers for Wales.
