An old industrial building in Newarthill could become a van dealership if North Lanarkshire Council supports the development.
New Brannock Ltd is seeking approval for a change of use for a building and storage site off Legbrannock Road which was previously the greenkeepers’ storage and maintenance shed at Torrance Park Golf Club, which closed in 2024.
Approval of the application would allow for the development of a new premises dealing in the rental and sale of vans.
The applicant has specified that if the application is successful parking at the location would be increased to 76 spaces, almost double the current 40 spaces.
A supporting statement on behalf of the applicant explains that the development would not involve changing the existing building, but it would be repurposed to allow for an office, toilets, and space for van repairs and servicing.
Although the hard surface would be extended to accommodate access and parking it would not cover the entire site which would remain mainly undeveloped and green.
A 2.4 metre steel fence would be installed for security and finished in a green coating to reduce its visual impact, and new double gates would also be added.
The plans also include new lighting which would be “wildlife friendly, low intensity and warm in colour”, while five bat boxes would also be added to promote biodiversity.
The business would be operated by Cameron Commercials, a specialist in van rental and sales which does not support daily rentals, meaning reduced traffic compared to similar businesses, as does the business model which is mainly online with vehicles being delivered to customers and only returning at the end of their lease or if they require replacement.
Planned business hours are 8am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday, although the company has indicated they would welcome the possibility of also trading on Saturdays.

Meanwhile, land at a farm in Motherwell could soon be converted into a dog exercise yard if the proposals are approved by North Lanarkshire Council.
If the planning application is agreed, the five-acre field at Greenside Farm could become a private dog exercise area, with this development including a new gravel car park, two fenced off fields for the dogs, a timber cabin and a small shelter for the use of customers. It would also have new access arrangements, gates and boundary fencing.
Neighbouring properties including Whites Filling Station in Newhouse have been sent notification of this application.
