Britain paying a ‘Brexit tax’ for leaving EU, former government minister claims

Brexit: Exploring the hidden costs
  • Former foreign secretary David Miliband has described Brexit as an act of “sabotage”, claiming it costs Britain up to £30 billion annually, which he likens to a “punishing Brexit tax every day”.
  • Writing in Sir Anthony Seldon’s book The Brexit Effect, Miliband urged a future Labour government to prioritise rebuilding closer ties with the EU to mitigate further economic consequences.
  • His remarks coincide with The Independent’s new campaign, “Europe: The Way Back”, which will investigate the impact of Brexit and explore the UK’s future relationship with Europe.
  • Miliband highlighted research indicating that business investment is 12-18 per cent lower than it would have been without Brexit, with employment and productivity also seeing declines of 3-4 per cent.
  • He also contended that leaving the EU has not resolved immigration challenges and emphasised the critical importance of the UK’s relationship with European nations amid increasing global disorder.
