ASUU suspends strike at Abia varsity, gives management deadline to recall professor

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Friday suspended its strike action at Abia State University, Uturu, with a directive that all academic staff should resume duties.

The suspension of the industrial action was announced by the Chairman and Secretary of ASUU at Abia State University, Chidi Mba and Victor Obisike, respectively, in a statement.

According to the ASUU leaders, the decision followed a resolution reached at the union’s congress meeting held on Friday, August 28, 2026, after members considered developments surrounding the issues that led to the industrial action.

The ASUU members, however, expressed concern over the continued suspension of Professor of Economics Nnamdi Nwaeze and gave the university management until Friday, September 4, 2026, to recall him and lift the suspension imposed on him.

The union resolved that failure by the management to act within the stipulated period would leave it with no option but to resume the suspended industrial action.

The branch also reminded members that only the branch chairperson is authorised to speak officially on behalf of ASUU at Abia State University.
