Flesh-Eating Parasite Breaches Two State Borders — Officials on Alert
A Cyclospora cayetanensis parasite outbreak has infected 145 people across 17 U.S. states between May 1 and June 16.
The infections have resulted in 20 hospitalizations, though no deaths have been reported from the current outbreak.
New York has the highest concentration of cases (31-80), with Illinois and Texas reporting 11-30 cases each, and other states having 1-10 cases.
Health officials believe the infections are linked to contaminated food consumed within the U.S., as none of the affected individuals reported recent international travel.
Symptoms of cyclosporiasis, which can last for weeks, include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, cramping, bloating, nausea, and fatigue.
