The 38-year-old surpassed the record previously held by Germany’s Miroslav Klose.
Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappé is hot on Messi’s heels for the top spot, having also surpassed Klose with a total of 18 goals.
As such, the overall top scorers in Fifa Men’s World Cup history are now as follows: Lionel Messi (19), Kylian Mbappé (18), Miroslav Klose (16), Brazil’s Ronaldo (15) and Gerd Müller (14).
