Tributes have been paid to a young deckhand who died in a tragic accident in Scapa Flow.
Shaun Shepherd died after he fell from a boat at the Orkney spot on July 23. The 22-year-old, from North Uist, had been working for Inverlussa when the horror incident took place.
A police investigation into Shaun’s death is currently underway, however, there are no suspicious circumstances.
A statement from Shaun’s employer reads: “At the end of last week, one of our crewmen died in a tragic accident in Orkney. We are devastated by his death, and no words can adequately express the sadness we are feeling.
“He was an exceptional deckhand whose kindness, dedication and strength of character touched everyone who had the privilege of working alongside him. He was one of our very best: dependable, hardworking and always willing to take the time to help others. He was not only a deeply respected colleague but also a true friend to so many within the Inverlussa family.
“His loss is being felt profoundly, and he will be missed every day. Our deepest sympathies are with his family and loved ones as they face this sudden loss. We are also providing support to those who were on board and to colleagues across the company.
“The relevant authorities are investigating the circumstances of the accident, and we are cooperating fully with their investigation. For this reason, we will not be issuing any further comments at this time.”

Announcing Shaun’s death on social media, his sister Lauren wrote: “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our dear son and brother, Shaun, who suddenly passed away on July 23. As a family, we would like to thank everyone for their overwhelming support, kind words and sympathy during this very sad time.”
North Uist Free Church added: “Our hearts go out to the Shepherd family at this devastating time.”
Dozens of friends paid tribute to Shaun online.
Mary-Alex Kirkpatrick wrote: “Such a heartbreak for you all. My prayers are for you all. Shaun, you are with Father God now and surrounded by indescribable love.”
Mac Macfarlane said: “I miss him loads, I’m absolutely gutted. He was like a brother. Thinking of all the family. Fly high brother, one in a million.”
Murdo MacKinnon added: “So sorry to hear such sad news. Condolences to the family. Thinking of you all at this sad time.”
Steph Gordon commented: “Absolutely heartbreaking. I’m so sorry for your devastating loss. You are all in my thoughts, sending lots of love and light to you all.”
Inspector David Hall from Police Scotland said: “Around 2.50pm on Thursday, July 23, 2026, we were called to Stromness pier after a report that a man had fallen from a boat. Emergency services attended, and the 22-year-old man was pronounced dead a short time later.
“Inquiries are ongoing, and the death is not being treated as suspicious.”
