Senegal held a 2-0 lead over Belgium in their last 32 World Cup clash, but threw it all away through poor defending and rash decision making. Late goals from Romelu Lukaku and Leandro Trossard forced 30 minutes of additional time, before a 120th minute penalty decision in the Europeans’ favour gave them the match outright, Youri Tielemans making it look easy from 12 yards out.

It wasn’t the only touch of drama from Wednesday’s World Cup fixtures, however. The earlier kick-off also saw England secure a 2-1 win over DR Congo to secure their place in the last 16, Harry Kane’s heroics on full display as he bagged a late brace following a tough test, in which, the Three Lions trailed 1-0 for the majority.

And there’s still time for more thrills on and off the pitch, as the USA play host to Bosnia & Herzegovina in San Francisco at 1am.

Stay tuned as Mirror Football brings you blow by blow updates from that clash, as well as all of the latest World Cup news and reaction.

It was a match all but guaranteed to be won by Senegal, who held a 2-0 lead until the 86th minute thanks to goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr – only to be thrown away in the dying minutes.

Romelu Lukaku equalised with just four minutes left on the clock, before Leandro Trossard levelled matters in the final minute of normal time. A gruelling 30 minutes of extra time then ensued, as both sides looked to break the deadlock, only for it to finish in cruel fashion.

At the death of extra time, Lamine Camara fouled Youri Tielemans in his own area, with a lenghty VAR check leading to a penalty for Belgium. Tielemans ultimately stepped up to convert, giving his nation a 3-2 win.

Declan Rice insists that he’s as ‘good as gold’ despite being subbed off in the closing stages of England’s 2-1 win over DR Congo on Wednesday evening. The 27-year-old hobbled off the pitch after Harry Kane bagged his brace, replaced by John Stones.

However, the Arsenal midfielder has since confirmed that there’s no cause for concern as England prepare for a clash with Mexico on Monday, July 6. He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “It’s what happens when you play in 30-degree heat I suppose.

“Tough game. Give it everything and bodies been through a lot in that match. Time to recover and go again.”

He added: “I’m fine. Good as gold.”
