Wordle is the latest game to get the TV treatment, with a gameshow spin-off focused on the popular word puzzle landing next year.

The series will be filmed in Manchester and broadcast across the US and UK, with Savannah Guthrie, who presents the Today Show in America, serving as the host.

Jimmy Fallon’s production company, Electric Hot Dog, will co-produce the series – the premise of which sounds very similar to ITV ’s Lingo, fronted by Adil Ray.

The competition will be based on the puzzle of the same name, created by Josh Wardle in 2021, and will follow contestants competing for a cash prize by finding a mystery five-letter word in less than six guesses.

BBC reports that the Wordle typeface and colour scheme is expected to be replicated. The 30-minute episodes are slated to premiere on our screens in 2027, with casting now open.

Speaking about their project, Jimmy said he was “very honoured to be working with Savannah Guthrie on this show”, adding in a statement: “Savannah has that rare combination of intelligence, charm, and warmth that makes everyone feel instantly welcome.

“And she obviously knows how to host a show. I am super proud and happy and I think we developed a solid gamer for prime-time.”

Filming was originally delayed after Savannah’s family was hit with tragedy, following the disappearance of her mum, Nancy, in February.

She recently returned to filming the Today show last month, following an extended break from screens. The search for Nancy is still ongoing but the host issued a heartbreaking message on Sunday, coinciding with Mother’s Day in the US.

Alongside a devastating Instagram video, she wrote: “Mother, daughter, sister, Nonie – we miss you with every breath. We will never stop looking for you. We will never be at peace until we find you.”

Josh created Worlde five years ago and the addictive daily brainteaser quickly took on a life of its own. Players are given six attempts to guess a five-letter word – with coloured tiles indicating whether their letters are in the word, and in the right place.

He sold it to the New York Times the following year, and admitted to the Sunday Times that he hadn’t played it since that day.
