- Reasons for resigning: Gareth Southgate stepped down as the manager of the England national football team in July 2024 because he felt it was time for a change and a new chapter. After eight years in charge, he firmly believed the squad needed fresh leadership to take them forward into the future. It was a deeply personal choice to step aside while the team was still highly competitive on the global stage.
- The final match: His resignation came shortly after England suffered a devastating 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Unfortunately this game marked his second consecutive loss in a European Championship final, breaking the hearts of not only Southgate and his players, but the entire nation.
- Media and fan pressure: During his final tournament, Southgate faced intense criticism from fans and the media regarding the team’s pragmatic playing style. He acknowledged the heavy emotional toll of the job, which ultimately contributed to his decision to walk away.
- Taking a UEFA role: In August 2024, Southgate took on a new job as a technical observer for UEFA. In this position, he was tasked with analysing European matches from a holistic coaching perspective and identifying emerging tactical trends across the sport.
- Hosting for the BBC: By late 2025, Southgate expanded his horizons by accepting a hosting role for a BBC Sounds audio series called One Of A Kind. This unique broadcasting venture saw him interviewing various successful industry leaders, allowing him to step outside the sporting world to uncover mainstream inspirational stories.
- Discussing his career: In early 2026, Southgate appeared on The Football Boardroom podcast, which is co-hosted with former Liverpool executive Christian Purslow and journalist Henry Winter. The podcast aims to peel back the curtain on the inner workings of Premier League boardrooms, with Southgate discussing his time as Three Lions boss.
- Writing a book: Aside from his media and broadcasting duties, the former England manager has been keeping immensely busy by dedicating his free time to writing his own book. Dear England: Lessons on Leadership was released in 2025 and documents his unique insights on leadership. A drama about Southgate, Dear England, which is a four-part series is based on James Graham’s multi award-winning play of the same name, is also set to air on Sunday, May 24.
- Future managerial prospects: While he was heavily linked with high-profile club jobs like Manchester United shortly after his exit, Southgate has stated he is not rushing back into management. However, he has completely refused to rule out a return to the dugout in the future. He frequently notes that his career path has always been rather unpredictable, leaving the door open for a potential return to the touchline
