Latest binge worthy crime drama from Netflix utilises dozens of familiar locations.
All episodes of six-part series Legends are available now on the platform. Despite only being released earlier this week it has steadily made its way to the top of the most watched series on the service among users.
Perhaps that is no surprise considering the gripping narrative that is based on an extraordinary true story. Inspired by the book The Betrayer co-written by Guy Stanton, it follows a number of HM Customs officers who go undercover to tackle dangerous drug gangs,
Set in the 1990s at the end of Margaret Thatcher’s time as Prime Minister, we follow a group of Customs workers who utilise an unusual method in their battle with the illegal drug trade following political pressure.
Increasing drug use is being felt across the country, often with tragic consequences. As part of a top-secret operation, this small team of employees are sent undercover. Their task is to infiltrate Britain’s most dangerous drug gangs and do anything it takes to bring them down from the inside.
It is created for television by Scottish screenwriter Neil Forsyth, whose previous credits include Guilt and The Gold. Much like his past work, the production utilises numerous real life locations to add to the realism of the action.
Forsyth explained why this was so important. He said: “Our guiding principles were to make it look cinematic and feel authentic. We shot almost exclusively in practical locations, for example. The enormous amount of locations was a challenge for us, production-wise, but gives the viewer that sense of constantly moving into surprising new worlds. You never know where the story’s going to go, which is very exciting narratively for the audience, but can make production people tear their hair out! We’ve just been on the move constantly, like a travelling circus.”
