Former Miss South Africa contestant and Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 winner, Chidimma Adetshina, has said she was “treated unfairly and targeted” in South Africa amid an ongoing legal battle over her citizenship status and possible deportation.

Speaking in a video shared by eNCA, a South African TV via X.com after the Cape Town Regional Court adjourned the case on Wednesday, Adetshina reiterated that she was born in South Africa and said she had continued to follow the appropriate legal process to establish her citizenship status.

She said despite what she described as unfair treatment, she would not respond to the situation with anger, stressing the need for the rule of law to guide the process.

“I believe that I have been treated unfairly and targeted and there has been an attempt to make me an example. But my message is not going to be one out of anger,” she said.

Adetshina urged South Africans to reject xenophobia and misinformation, saying people should be treated based on their status and citizenship.

“South Africa is governed by the rule of law and we should not allow xenophobia and misinformation to determine how people are going to be treated. We should all be guided by the spirit of Ubuntu,” she added.

The Cape Town Regional Court adjourned the matter until February 27, 2027. Adetshina is challenging efforts to detain her pending deportation proceedings.

She maintains that she was born in Soweto, South Africa, and has applied through the appropriate legal channels to determine her status and citizenship.

Adetshina said she had continued to follow the legal process throughout the controversy and would respect the outcome.

“Throughout this ordeal I have availed myself of all appropriate legal laws and I will continue to respect and abide by each process,” she said.

She also thanked her family, friends, supporters and legal representatives for their support and commitment to her case.
