UK cases fuel theft surge amid surging prices and Middle East conflict
- British motorists are stealing an estimated £200,000 worth of fuel daily, a surge directly linked to the Iran oil crisis and escalating pump prices.
- Incidents of fuel theft have risen by 20 per cent in the five months following 28 February, with the value of stolen fuel increasing by 48 per cent to an average of £194,000 per day.
- First-time offenders are largely responsible for the increase, accounting for a 23 per cent rise in incidents and a 26 per cent increase in the volume of fuel stolen.
- Pump prices have significantly increased, with petrol reaching 160p per litre (up 27p) and diesel 179p per litre (up 37p) compared to before the conflict.
- Forecourt Eye is collaborating with Facewatch to provide crime reporting technology and optional facial recognition to help retailers combat theft, which disproportionately impacts smaller businesses.
