UI governing council appoints Peter Olapegba new Vice Chancellor

The governing council of the University of Ibadan has appointed Professor Peter Olapegba as the new Vice Chancellor of the institution. 

Olapegba was announced as the 14th Vice Chancellor of the institution on Wednesday afternoon.

The Pro Chancellor of the university, Chief Bisi Akande, in a statement obtained by DAILY POST on Wednesday  noted that five shortlisted candidates were interviewed on Wednesday. 

Akande, a former governor of Osun State, said that Olapegba emerged after the rigorous exercise. 

Akande said: “At the end of the exercise, two additional applications were received and this brought the number of the applicants to eight (8). On Tuesday, 21 July 2026, the Council interacted with all eight (8) candidates. 

“Today Wednesday, 22 July 2026, the Joint Council-Senate Selection Board interviewed the five (5) candidates shortlisted. At the end of a very thorough, transparent and highly competitive exercise, Professor Peter Olarnakinde Olapegba emerged as the best candidate for the position of Vice Chancellor”. 

DAILY POST gathered that the newly appointed VC has earlier served as Deputy Vice Chancellor, DVC administration.

It was learnt that Olapegba lectures in the department of Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences. The new VC is expected to assume office on 1st December this year. 

DAILY POST gathered that Olapegba contested against other candidates among whom are Professor Adeyinka Aderinto from Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences and Professor Adebola Ekanola who had earlier served as Acting Vice Chancellor of the university from the Faculty of Arts and other candidates.
