TV presenter Sarah Khalifa sentenced to death on drug charges

- Egyptian television presenter Sarah Khalifa and 11 co-defendants have been sentenced to death by hanging by a Cairo court in a major drugs case.
- Prosecutors alleged the group formed an organised criminal gang responsible for importing raw materials, manufacturing narcotics, and distributing them.
- Law enforcement officers seized over 750kg of narcotics and raw materials, alongside unlicensed firearms and found two apartments allegedly used as drug laboratories.
- Khalifa denied the allegations, maintaining she had never seen drugs until she was photographed with them at the anti-narcotics authority’s offices.
- The death sentences were referred to Egypt’s Grand Mufti for an advisory opinion, and the defendants can appeal to the country’s Court of Cassation.
