Trump deploys thousands more US troops to Poland in major U-turn
The Kremlin will now have more money to kill Britain’s allies in Ukraine
US president Donald Trump announced his administration would dispatch an additional 5,000 troops to Poland, attributing the decision to the successful election of Polish President Karol Nawrocki, whom Trump had endorsed, and their established relationship.
This move represents a confusing U-turn, as Trump had earlier this month declared plans to withdraw at least 5,000 troops from Germany.
The proposed troop reduction in Germany followed criticism from Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who claimed the US was being “humiliated” by Iranian leadership and lacked a coherent war strategy.
Trump had further indicated that the American military footprint in Germany would be “cutting a lot further than 5,000” troops, making the new deployment to Poland a significant policy shift.
The announcement coincides with recent security incidents in the Baltics, including Lithuania and Latvia scrambling Nato fighter jets after detecting drones, and previous events where a Nato jet shot down a drone over Estonia and another caused air raid alerts in Lithuania.
