Former Manchester United player, Teddy Sheringham, has said that the club’s new signing, Youri Tielemans, does not possess the caliber required to play for a club of Manchester United’s status.
In July, Tielemans moved from Aston Villa to join Michael Carrick’s team in a deal worth £35 million.
The 29-year-old midfielder is anticipated to be a key player for the club, expected to assume the leadership role following Casemiro’s departure.
Nonetheless, Sheringham has criticised Manchester United for failing to seek a younger midfielder during this summer’s transfer window.
The former Tottenham Hotspur player also believes that Tielemans will not make a significant impact at the Red Devils.
He told MetBonus, via Metro, “Manchester United have already lost their chance to acquire the additional midfielder they required, as all the top players have already been signed. To secure the best talent, one must be willing to invest. History has shown this. Reflect on Sir Alex Ferguson’s era; he was willing to spend significantly to recruit top young players who would set the standard.”
Sheringham, who was part of the treble-winning team in the 1998-99 season, further stated, “Will Youri Tielemans set an example, or will he simply join United to enjoy the experience, content to be part of the team?
“No. He will not alter the perception of the club or demand higher standards to restore them to greatness. He will only maintain the status quo, which is insufficient for a club of Manchester United’s stature.
“There’s too much pressure on him” – Louis Saha comments on Manchester United’s over-dependence on one key player.
Tielemans, who captained Belgium at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, made 134 appearances for Aston Villa before his move to the Red Devils. The former Leicester City player recorded 10 goals and 25 assists while playing under Unai Emery.
