Transfer: Why I snubbed Man United for Tottenham Hotspur – Mateus Fernandes

Former West Ham player, Mateus Fernandes, has disclosed the reasons behind his decision to join Tottenham Hotspur, instead of Manchester United this summer. 

He shared insights regarding his discussion with Tottenham boss, Roberto De Zerbi prior to the significant transfer.

Following West Ham United’s relegation, Fernandes was widely rumoured to be leaving the club. Both Manchester United and Spurs expressed interest in acquiring him. Ultimately, the north London club secured the Portuguese midfielder for a then club-record fee of £85 million.

In an interview with The Athletic, Fernandes elaborated on his choice to sign with Tottenham. Reflecting on his dialogue with De Zerbi, he stated:

“The manner in which he [De Zerbi] communicated with me and my family was crucial for my decision. He was in contact with me daily, and I am very pleased to collaborate with him, hoping we can achieve remarkable success together.

“It was primarily about establishing a connection, as my parents do not speak English fluently. It was more about emotions. He assured me that he would look after me, that he would act as my second father in England. I am very content to work alongside him,” he continued.

Manchester United have been aiming to bolster their midfield in light of Casemiro’s exit and Manuel Ugarte’s injury.

They have signed Andrey Santos from Chelsea. Meanwhile, Tottenham further shattered their transfer record by signing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United for £100 million, including add-ons, just days after Fernandes.
