President Bola Tinubu on Monday received the President of Madagascar, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, for high-level bilateral talks aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic relations between both African nations.
President Randrianirina arrived at the State House in the afternoon and was accorded an official reception before proceeding to a closed-door meeting with President Tinubu.
The visiting Malagasy leader was welcomed by senior government officials led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, before being ushered into the President’s office complex for discussions on issues of mutual interest.
The visit marks Randrianirina’s first official trip to Nigeria since assuming office in October 2025 following Madagascar’s political transition.
Although details of the meeting were not immediately made public, diplomatic sources indicated that discussions were expected to focus on strengthening cooperation in key sectors, including trade, agriculture, security, climate resilience, and regional integration.
The engagement is also seen as part of ongoing efforts by both countries to deepen economic partnerships and promote greater collaboration within the African continent under the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area, AfCFTA.
Monday’s meeting follows an earlier interaction between Presidents Tinubu and Randrianirina during the Africa Forward Summit held in Nairobi, Kenya, where both leaders reportedly expressed commitment to expanding bilateral relations.
Analysts say the visit underscores growing diplomatic engagements among African nations as leaders seek stronger regional partnerships to address common challenges, including food security, infrastructure development, economic diversification, and climate change.
Madagascar, one of Africa’s largest island nations, has in recent months intensified its diplomatic outreach across the continent, seeking new strategic partnerships and investment opportunities.
The outcome of the Abuja talks is expected to further strengthen ties between Nigeria and Madagascar while opening new avenues for cooperation in areas critical to the development priorities of both countries.
