The Tartan Army out in Boston are urging the team to put the past behind us and get the result we need against Morocco on Friday.

Before now, our national team have qualified for 12 major tournaments but never yet been able to get through the group.

The tens of thousands of foot soldiers who have made the long trip across the pond are now desperate to see us finally change that.

With the extended 48-team World Cup allowing the eight best third-placed team to get through – they reckon we have never had a better chance, and the feeling is we will get at least a point tomorrow evening.

Irvine lads Davy Bowman, a 51-year-old business analyst, Jay Doherty, 51, Davie McCurry, a 49-year-old project manager, and Andy Macfarlane, a 51-year-old aircraft engineer, are certain we have enough to do it.

Davy added: “No doubt about it, this group are getting out of this group.

“This is the difference between previous Scotland teams to this one. It’s like a club atmosphere the boys have got now.

“I saw a video Andy Robertson said, that if they have a game on a Monday night they will all travel up on the Saturday so they can all have a pint before it – just like normal guys, but they are all very, very good at football.

“I think we will get the draw we need.”

Jay added: “I honestly think we will win it. This is a proper team, there’s no individuals. I’m predicting a 1-0 win.”

With the weather taking a slight turn on Thursday, organisers quickly closed the large fan zone in the city centre.

It seemed like a bit of an overreaction, as we woke to blustery conditions more akin to the Scottish climate.

Graham Kerr, a 40-year-old auditor from Clarkston, near Glasgow, was doing taking his mind off the nerves by doing the city’s freedom trail with wife Carla, a 37-year-old tax advisor, and their kids Elsie, 11, and William, 9.

Graham said: “We’ve had an absolutely brilliant trip so far. We are based in Providence, so we did the school buses to the game on Saturday. We did the Red Sox game which was brilliant too.

“It’s a huge game on Friday. To be honest, I would take a draw. They are the champions of the African Cup of Nations. They got a draw against Brazil.

“They’re a good team. But after getting the win against Haiti – we just have to be at it from the off. There’s no reason to think we can’t at least get a draw.

“They will be a different kettle of fish to Haiti – but this is our best chance to get out of a group.

“The fact it’s the first World Cup with three teams going through. Three points might even be enough. That is a pessimistic view and I would like to think we can get at least a point out of the next two games.

“But four points will be enough – we will get at least a point out of those two games.”

Reece Docherty, 27, and Mac Daniels a 26-year-old bar manager, have been loving their time in Boston.

Mac said: “We’ve been based been Providence and Boston having a great time. We drank way too much last night, that’s for sure!

“We’ve got tickets for the game on Friday. We just can’t wait for it, honestly.

“I think we will get at least a point in the next two games and secure it.”

Reece was wrapped in an flag donning the words ‘This Is Our Time’, and the support worker reckons that is going to soon be reality.

He said: “It’s a difficult one – but you’ve got to say we are going to win it. Another win and we are through. Three points and it’s there.

“You have to believe this is the team to do it. We have so many talismans in this team: Grant Hanley, John McGinn, Scott McTominay – it has to happen.”

Elaine Duncan, 60, Laura Duncan, 25, Andrew Duncan, 27, David Webb, 27 and Chris Webb, 57, have travelled all the way across to Boston from Dunfermline, in Fife,

Andrew told the Record: “We’ve all got tickets for the match, which is brilliant.

“We’ll probably be tailgating because we tried the trains the last game and it wasn’t a very good time!

“The plan is to find a place to tailgate along with some Americans and anyone else that’s there – even some Morocco fans.

“We are so excited for the game. We’re confident but I can’t say if we will win. I’m predicting a 1-1. Come on Scotland!”

Daniel Wales, a 34-year-old product manager, and his wife Yasmine, a 33-year-old financial advisor, both from Edinburgh, have just arrived in Boston.

Daniel said: “We’ve just arrived and we are off to find somewhere for a drink!

“We’ve been watching everyone out here before we arrived and we’ve been so jealous.

“We were going to come for the first game. But we are going to Miami too and we just can’t wait for the game on Friday.

“We have tickets for the match – we’re not looking forward to the travel chaos but we can’t wait for the game.

“We’re going to get the result we need. It suits us playing a team like Morocco.

“The way that we play, it actually suits that more than Haiti.

“I can see it being a backs to the wall game. I’d bite your hand off for a 0-0 just now. Come on Scotland!”.
