Players and coaching staff from both Canada and Qatar clashed after Canadian midfielder Ismael Kone suffered a sickening injury. Fifty minutes into their 2026 World Cup Group B clash, which Canada ultimately won 6-0, Assim Madibo lunged in from behind on Kone, leaving the Canadian star writhing in agony on the turf with what appeared to be a horrific lower leg injury.

Madibo was immediately seen clutching his head in his hands as a host of Canadian players swarmed around the distraught Qatari while medical staff rushed to attend to Kone. Tensions quickly boiled over as players from both sides let their emotions get the better of them, with some of Kone’s teammates visibly distressed by the harrowing scenes unfolding before them.

As the confrontation escalated between players and coaches, a member of the Canadian backroom staff was heard telling a referee: “His leg’s hanging off. It’s a f—ing broken leg over there.”

Canadian boss Jesse Marsh was visibly beside himself, reportedly making his way towards the Qatari dugout to confront their coaching staff. Madibo was shown a straight red card as the skirmishing on the pitch continued, leaving Qatar reduced to just nine men for the remainder of the match.

After medics stabilised Kone’s left leg, he was carefully loaded onto a stretcher and wheeled away from Vancouver Stadium. In a touching moment, the crowd rose to their feet to applaud the stricken star, who responded by giving the fans a defiant thumbs-up.

Around 14 minutes later, Nathan Saliba netted from a free kick, with the ball striking the post before creeping past Mahmud Abunada’s arm and into the net. As he wheeled away in celebration, Saliba formed an “8” with his two hands, Kone’s number.

He then sprinted to the touchline, snatched up Kone’s jersey and held it aloft to the supporters, drawing a thunderous reception as both fans and players continued to pour their hearts out. Canada extended their lead in the 75th minute when Mohammaed Manai turned the ball into his own net to make it 5-0.

Full-time saw the players come together again in an angry confrontation. Canada boss Marsch also seemed to engage in an angry exchange with his Qatar counterpart Julen Lopetegui.

Nevertheless, Kone’s World Cup is almost certainly over, though he was able to share in a historic moment during Canada’s draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina at Toronto Stadium in their World Cup opener. Cyle Larin grabbed the goal against Bosnia, and Kone admitted to feeling “faint” following the strike.

Opening up to reporters after the match, the star was refreshingly honest about his emotions on the day.

“Honestly, I felt like I was going to faint,” Kone told reporters after the game. “It was crazy because I feel like we did everything to give ourselves a chance to score.

“We were on top of them, pushing the game; we had momentum. We created so many chances, but we had one where we hit the bar.

“So, I think we deserved it. It was just like a relief. We knew the job wasn’t done, but it felt good in that moment to have the boost to keep going.”
