Until recently, the green transition was often seen as something only for homeowners and those who can afford to buy an electric car. But a one-of-a kind tariff from Octopus Energy has upended that narrative. Built specifically for households that need support most, Octopus Tenant Power is designed so that both landlords and tenants can benefit from the installation of rooftop solar and batteries.

The process couldn’t be simpler. To get the ball rolling, all landlords have to do is ask tenants if they’d like to join. If they’re keen, the landlord installs an approved solar and battery system, and then the tenant simply switches to the tariff. For landlords, it reduces the carbon footprint across their housing stock and offers a return on investment, for tenants, it means lower bills.

This is something that Linda, a tenant from Lancashire quickly discovered. “I’m always watching my energy bill, so I noticed the difference almost immediately,” she says. “Seeing that the costs weren’t increasing in the same way gave me a real sense of relief because I wasn’t constantly worrying about how much my next bill would be.”

Peace of mind for tenants

When Linda first heard that solar panels and battery storage were being installed, she was sceptical about the difference they would make. “I didn’t have particularly high expectations but I hoped that over the summer it might help reduce some of the pressure from my energy bills.”

But she found herself pleasantly surprised, and now thinks that the scheme has been life changing. “Before Tenant Power, high energy bills were putting a lot of pressure on my household budget,” she says. “I struggled to keep up with the rising costs, and I had to be more careful about how much energy I used. There were times when I would avoid putting the heating on or limit how long I used appliances because I was worried about the bill.”

Linda is one of many tenants benefitting from the scheme who have discovered that joining the Tenant Power tariff saves an average of £200 a year compared to a standard variable tariff. For her, the difference has been both practical and psychological.

“I’ve noticed the difference in both my bills and my peace of mind. My energy bills are lower, which has taken some of the financial pressure off my household budget,” she explains. “I also feel much less worried about using appliances or putting things on because I’m not constantly thinking about how much it’s going to cost. It’s given me more confidence and peace of mind in my day-to-day life.”

Linda explains that it’s the first time in years that the constant stress around energy bills has lifted. “Since moving onto Tenant Power, my energy bill has basically halted. I’m no longer seeing the same increases and pressure that I was experiencing before, which has made a noticeable difference to my household finances,” she says. “It gives me much more stability and reassurance when it comes to managing my bills.”

One of the major plus points of the scheme is how easy it is for tenants, as Linda attests: “I don’t even notice the system is on, it just runs in the background. I don’t have to actively manage anything, and the main thing I notice is that my bills are lower,” she says. “It’s made things much simpler and taken away some of the worry around energy costs.”

Having seen the impact it’s had on her bills, she’s an advocate for the scheme. “I’d say absolutely give it a chance. Octopus Tenant Power has genuinely changed my life,” she explains. “My bills are lower, I have much less stress about energy costs, and I feel more secure about the future. I’d definitely recommend it to others who are struggling with their energy bills.”

Linda’s experience is just the beginning. While Octopus Tenant Power opens new doors for renters, it highlights a much bigger shift: solar, smart batteries, and low-carbon tech are no longer optional luxuries.

Across every type of home, combining clean generation with intelligent storage is proving to be the most effective way to beat high energy costs, proving that a greener future is also a far cheaper one for everyone.
