Teen among five who drowned in UK waters during recent heatwave

Heatwave: Thunderstorms expected as extreme heat weather warning extended
  • Three people, including a teenager, have died after getting into difficulty swimming in open water, bringing the total number of drownings during the recent heatwave to five.
  • Brody Leach, 22, was recovered from the River Severn in Shrewsbury, a 15-year-old boy’s body was found at Testwood Lakes near Southampton, and a 69-year-old man died in Clacton.
  • These incidents follow two other deaths earlier in the week: a 50-year-old man at Aberavon beach and a teenage boy in a lake in Syston, Leicestershire.
  • The deaths occurred amidst widespread warnings about the dangers of swimming in open water, particularly the risk of cold water shock syndrome, during a period of record-breaking temperatures.
  • Friday was confirmed as the UK’s hottest June day on record, with a provisional temperature of 37.3C in Santon Downham, Suffolk, following two other record-breaking days.
