Tea and coffee drinkers in the UK are being told that they can cut their milk spend in half by making one change. The average person in the UK has between three and four cups of tea per day, which is roughly an astonishing 844 cups per year.

Many people feel that they cannot start the day without a caffeine kick, especially if they have a job with an early start or kids to get out of the door in the morning. This means some people in the UK might be drinking up to 34 pints of milk in their tea and coffee alone per year.

Although that might not sound like a lot, there is a way tea and coffee lovers can cut the cost in half by making just one change.

With many people trying to save as much money as possible in their everyday lives, the R/UKFrugel Reddit Community is full of cash saving tips to help people build up their sinking funds, get ready for travelling or to simply live within their means.

The poster said people can cut their milk costs in half by simply buying whole milk instead of skimmed or semi-skimmed.

The poster said: “Like many people, I stuck to semi-skimmed milk in tea for years simply because it’s what my mum used and I assumed it was the healthier choice.

“Then I tried whole milk and hit a bizarre realisation: a splash of whole milk goes twice as far. You literally need half the amount to get the same taste in your tea, yet it costs the same per bottle.

“If tea is your primary milk drain, switching to whole milk literally halves your weekly spend.”

People commented under the post to thank the user for sharing their money saving tip. One person said: “Whole milk is healthier anyway, has more nutrients and less sugar. Fat is not particularly unhealthy, the Mediterranean diet is super healthy and is relatively high fat.”

A second added: “Whole fat milk is the only way to go. Another top saving tip to cut the cost of your sponges in half – cut them in half!.”

Other people made fun of the post, adding that it would hardly save any money, while others said they couldn’t stand the taste of whole milk.

One person commented: “I love my tea with fully skimmed milk and no sugar. Half skimmed of full fat milk make it too heavy for my taste.”

A second said: “Cut it even more by drinking it black. Thought I’d never enjoy black tea but now I hardly tell the difference.”

A third added: “Oh, I see we’re really going super frugal here!”
