A major search operation has been launched for a young man thought to have vanished after going into a lake in Kent.

Police raced to the scene just before 3pm this afternoon following concerns for a person in the Swanscombe area.

It is believed a young man may have vanished after entering the water, according to Metro.

Images showed a large emergency services response, with two small rescue dinghies seen on the water.

It comes as seven young people and two adults, including a grandfather in Cornwall, tragically died in rivers, lakes, reservoirs and the sea during the heatwave over the last few days.

Kent Police say they are working alongside other emergency crews in the Galley Hill Road area of Swanscombe.

The area is a residential and industrial corridor in north Kent. It lies between Swanscombe and Northfleet and is situated just south of the Thames Estuary.

Several bodies of water and lakes are located within a short distance.

The incident comes as water safety experts have warned about the dangers of outdoor swimming after nine drownings in the UK heatwave.

Seven young people and two adults, including a grandfather in Cornwall, have tragically died in rivers, lakes, reservoirs and the sea during the heatwave over the last few days.

Experts have warned of “cold shock response” as the water will still be at winter temperatures, causing hyperventilation which often leads to drowning.

Kent Police was called to the area just before 3pm due to concerns for a person in Swanscombe.

A spokesperson said: “Kent Police was called at around 2.51pm on Wednesday 27 May 2026 due to concerns for a person in the Galley Hill Road area of Swanscombe.

“Officers are currently at the scene along with other emergency services.”

Emergency services are continuing to search a river in Swanscombe, Kent, where a young man is believed to have vanished.

The search operation is understood to involve Kent Police, volunteers from Kent Search and Rescue, team from South East Coast Ambulance Service and specialist water rescue teams.

Thermal drone operators are also reportedly being used.
