Actress Sally Phillips has teased the return of an iconic 90s sitcom.

The 56-year-old appeared on the latest instalment of Sunday Brunch on Channel 4 on June 28. Talking to presenters Simon Rimmer and Tim Lovejoy, Sally was quizzed on her hit comedy show, Smack the Pony.

Smack the Pony was a hit British sketch comedy series that aired on Channel 4 from 1999 until 2003. Fronted by Fiona Allen, Doon Mackichan and Sally the show also featured regular appearances from Sarah Alexander, Darren Boyd and Cavan Clerkin.

When asked whether the show will be making a comeback, the star replied: “We’ve been offered a special. We did the Edinburgh festival last year and we did a kind of chat show. It did well, people liked it.”

She added: “It was amazing actually, this sketch show that I wrote at 27, people knew the lines to that! It was amazing, it was really touching.” However, she didn’t elaborate on when or where the series will return.

Smack the Pony aired on Channel 4 and quickly became known for its sharp humour, female-led comedy and blending relatable observations with surreal humour. Many sketches centred on awkward relationships, workplace rivalries and everyday social situations, while others embraced more offbeat storylines.

Recurring favourites included spoof dating agency videos featuring eccentric characters and musical parody performances that typically brought each episode to a close. The show’s talented writing team later went on to create acclaimed comedies including Green Wing and Campus.

The show ran from 1999-2003. However, in 2003, the show’s leads announced that they would not be continuing with the show as they preferred to quit while the show was a success rather than risk the show’s popularity and quality declining.

Seeing Sally on Sunday Brunch, one viewer headed over to X and wrote: “I’m actually enjoying #SundayBrunch today and Sally Philips is a legend. Should just have her talking for the whole show.”
