Starmer cracks joke about Labour turmoil in Commons speech
Sir Keir Starmer joked about the ongoing turmoil surrounding his leadership as he spoke in the Commons.
The prime minister said: “The gracious speech was brilliantly proposed by my honourable friend, the member for Bradford West (Naz Shah). Members across the House will have read her remarkable new book. Her list of endorsements is truly impressive, reaching well over 100 members – at last, a list that we could all get behind.”
Health secretary Wes Streeting could be seen laughing along to jokes made by the prime minister, despite reports he told allies that he is preparing to resign and trigger a leadership contest.
Earlier today, the prime minister said he had “full confidence” in the minister after they met for a brief conversation this morning, after which he declined to speak to reporters, and his team did not deny claims that he is poised to quit his government role.
The Labour Party is experiencing significant internal division, with some MPs calling for Sir Keir’s resignation following recent ministerial departures, while over 100 other MPs have signed a statement backing his leadership.
