Steve Clarke has surprisingly resigned as Scotland head coach after their World Cup exit was confirmed on Saturday.
Clarke penned a new deal until 2030 before the tournament in North America, but has called time on his tenure after it was confirmed that they will not progress to the last-32 as a best-placed third-place team. The Scots lost to Morocco and Brazil in their group, earning a solitary 1-0 win over Haiti.
The 62-year-old led his country to three major tournaments, with European Championship appearances in 2021 and 2024, making him Scotland’s most successful national coach – but he has now stepped down after seven years in the role.
In an open letter to supporters, Clarke said: “The most emotional part of this goodbye is for my players, without whom we wouldn’t have had any of the memories that we’ve accumulated from 2019 until now.
“They deserve all the praise and adulation that they receive and it was truly an honour to be called their Gaffer. Thanks for having me and good luck to my successor.”
Scotland’s appearance this summer was their first at a World Cup finals since 1998, but they were dealt a tough hand with their group. It is understood the players were told on Saturday at their base in Charlotte, as their elimination was confirmed following Croatia’s win over Ghana.
Ian Maxwell, Scottish FA Chief Executive, added: “While we are all disappointed to have exited the World Cup at the group stage, we must not lose sight of the undeniable progress made during Steve’s seven years in charge.
