A stabbing inside New York City’s bustling Penn Station on Sunday evening injured six people, including one seriously, according to the New York City Fire Department.

Two people with moderate injuries and another two with minor injuries were taken to Bellevue Hospital for treatment, and a sixth individual was taken with minor injuries to Cornell Hospital, FDNY told The Independent.

The alleged perpetrator is in custody, the department added.

The suspect is thought to be homeless, sources told ABC News.

“Earlier this afternoon, Amtrak Police responded to a reported stabbing at New York Penn Station,” Amtrak told The Independent in a statement. “The suspect has been apprehended and an investigation is underway.”

“This guy stabbed somebody in Penn Station,” film critic Brandon Norwood wrote on X, sharing a picture of a group of officers pressing an individual against the ground. “People were flooding out of the station.”

“I am relieved that a suspect is in custody and grateful to the first responders who acted swiftly,” New York City Councilman Carl Wilson wrote on X. “My thoughts are with the victims and their families.”

“I am deeply disturbed by reports of a stabbing at Penn Station that left multiple people injured,” City Council Speaker Julie Menin wrote on X. “My thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones, and I am grateful to the first responders and law enforcement officers who quickly secured the scene and took the suspect into custody.”

Thousands of local fans and out-of-town visitors are expected to flow through Penn Station tomorrow as they head to Monday’s NBA Finals faceoff at nearby Madison Square Garden, where the New York Knicks look to continue their historic 2-0 run against the San Antonio Spurs after decades without a championship in the Big Apple.

Security considerations in the area around Penn Station were already heightened, as President Donald Trump is set to attend the game.

The president’s impending arrival at MSG has prompted the Knicks to announce a no-bag policy and “TSA-style screening procedures” for Monday’s match-up.

The Knicks have also canceled planned watch parties outside the stadium and have recommended fans arrive at the arena two hours early.

The Trump administration has said the government will pour $8 billion into renovating the little-loved Penn Station, the busiest train station in the Western Hemisphere, which has developed a reputation for being dingy and at times unsafe.

Earlier this week, the NYPD announced that murders, shooting incidents, and the number of shooting victims were at their lowest levels in recorded history for the first five months of a given year.

Overall, major crime decreased more than 10 percent compared to last May, the police said.
