Spain defender, Marc Cucurella, has honoured World Cup-winning coach, Luis de la Fuente, by getting a tattoo of the manager after helping the national team secure the trophy.

Cucurella was part of the Spain squad that defeated Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup final this month, with De la Fuente guiding the team to their latest international triumph.

The Real Madrid defender, who joined the club from Chelsea for £52m in June, revealed the tattoo on social media.

The design features a portrait of De la Fuente holding the World Cup trophy alongside the number 26.

As reported by BBC Sport on Wednesday, “Promise kept,” Cucurella wrote while sharing images and videos of the tattoo being completed.

The defender had promised to get the tribute following Spain’s victory, and De la Fuente joked after the final that he expected Cucurella to keep his word.

“I’ve already told them, ‘Did you make a mistake?’” De la Fuente said during his post-match news conference.

“They did, but they’ll enjoy it. I’m not so terribly ugly that they will need to put it somewhere nobody can see it. But it makes me laugh and I am proud they keep their promises.”

Cucurella was one of Spain’s key players during the tournament and became known for his personality off the pitch as well as his performances.

The defender carried his wife’s pyjama top as a lucky charm throughout the World Cup and previously explained that his trademark long, curly hair helps his child easily identify him during matches.

The new tattoo will now serve as a lasting reminder of Spain’s World Cup success and his relationship with the coach who led the team to glory.
