South Korea to restore Gyeongwon Line railway connecting with North Korea
- South Korea is set to resume work on restoring a section of the Gyeongwon Line railway near the Demilitarised Zone, a project initially launched in 2015 but suspended in 2016.
- The railway aims to eventually connect to North Korea’s eastern city of Wonsan and improve access to peace and ecological tourism sites in the DMZ.
- This decision follows North Korea’s 2024 demolition of cross-border road and rail links, as Pyongyang redefines South Korea as a hostile state.
- South Korean President Lee Jae Myung acknowledged the challenges of engaging with an unresponsive North Korea but emphasised the continued importance of pursuing peace and coexistence.
- The Unification Ministry also plans to broaden the use of the Inter-Korean Cooperation Fund to support domestic border-area projects, peace economy initiatives, and reunification activities, given the low annual expenditure since 2016.
