A huge city centre blaze has sparked a warning from firefighters telling residents in Sheffield to keep their windows and doors closed as crews tackle the flames.

Thick, black smoke can be seen billowing from a building in Sheffield city centre with the fire said to have broken out at a building near Hollis Croft and Rockingham Street.

Motorists and pedestrians have been advised to avoid the area as firefighters battle to bring the fire under control. The cause of the fire is not yet known and there are no confirmed reports of any injuries at this stage.

A Yorkshire Ambulance spokesperson said: “We received an emergency call at 12.28pm this afternoon (2 June) to report a fire at a building on Garden Street in Sheffield.

“A number of ambulance resources, including two ambulances and the Hazardous Area Response Team, were dispatched to the scene but no patients were conveyed to hospital.”

According to The Star, residents reported seeing flames on the roof of Hot Pot Heroes, a takeaway on Garden Street, and heard a fire alarm sound at approximately 12.30pm. Those nearby were told to evacuate at around 1pm.

Earlier unconfirmed reports suggested the fire may have originated in a flat.

A fire service spokesperson said: “Firefighters are currently in attendance at a fire on Garden Street, Sheffield. Anyone living or working nearby should keep their windows and doors closed due to smoke in the area. Please avoid the area while crews work to bring this incident to a safe conclusion.”
