School closures live: Heatwave shuts 100s of UK schools amid travel chaos

Hundreds of schools have announced closures ahead of a red weather warning for extreme heat, which is due to come into force on Wednesday.

Temperatures could soar to as high as 40C this week, with several records expected to be broken over the coming days. Forecasters say the UK could even surpass its current highest-ever recorded temperature of 40.3C, set in Coningsby, Lincolnshire, in July 2022.

More than 300 schools across England and Wales are planning to close either fully or partially on Wednesday and Thursday because of the extreme weather, as experts warn that heatwaves will happen more often and bring even higher temperatures “as long as emissions continue”.

Some schools have moved lessons online, while others are shortening the school day and finishing by lunchtime. Working parents are entitled to up to four weeks of unpaid parental leave each year, which can be used in the event of sudden school closures.

As the number of schools set to close on Wednesday increases compared to Tuesday, more than 100,000 students will be affected in some way.

Each school is expected to safeguard students and make their own decision as there is no legal maximum temperature for classrooms.

Southampton City Council says the “safety, health and wellbeing” of children, young people and staff is its priority during the heatwave.

Amanda Barnes-Andrews, the council’s cabinet member for children and learning, said that the council is working with schools to asses the situation.

“Having completed risk assessments, some schools may need to decide to close,” she said. She added that schools may deem it best to adjust timetables, relax uniform and ensure access to water and cooler spaces rather than fully shut.

Elsewhere, schools will be at least partially closed over the next two days.

Around 100 schools in Buckinghamshire, along with 86 schools in Gloucestershire, will be open for half days during the heatwave.

Red heat health alerts have been issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) for the East of England, East Midlands, London, the South East, the South West and the West Midlands, and amber heat health alerts for the North East, North West, and Yorkshire and The Humber.

These alerts are in place from 1am on Wednesday to 11pm on Thursday, and mean “adverse temperatures are likely to impact on the health and wellbeing of the population”.

Fredi Otto, professor of climate science at Imperial College London, said heatwaves will occur more often and with even higher temperatures “as long as emissions continue”.

She said “our homes, infrastructure, and economy are not built to cope with these conditions”, adding: “The UK has been built for a climate that just doesn’t exist.”

Prof Otto told a media briefing: “Temperatures above 35 degrees used to be extremely rare in the UK. They have now occurred in seven out of the last 12 years, and this sustained surge in extreme heat would not have happened without human-caused climate change.”

The highest temperature recorded today was 34.6C in Wisley, Surrey, the Met Office has said.

Northern Ireland and Scotland saw their hottest days of the year, with temperatures climbing to 28.1C and 29C respectively.

West Berkshire Council has said that while schools “should remain open wherever it is safe and practical to do so”, it recognises they are facing “challenging conditions”.

Met Office press officer Grahame Madge said: “The Met Office is flagging 39C as a headline maximum temperature on Thursday, most likely for somewhere in London or the South East.

“It is possible we could see temperatures higher than the 39C if the final values are at the upper end of our narrow range.

“It is important to remember that the temperature value is only one element of this extreme heatwave story.

“The other major factor is the high humidity which for many will make the intense heat even harder to endure.”

The hot weather is expected to cause major disruption for parents, with schools closing or sending pupils home early to protect them from the heat.

In Somerset, around 100 schools will close over the next three days, with the vast majority fully shut on Wednesday and Thursday, according to Somerset Council.

A “heat dome” settling over western Europe could push temperatures close to 40C by Wednesday, with the latest heatwave expected to surpass the June record of 35.6C set in Hampshire in 1976.

The Met Office has issued a red warning for extreme heat covering an area stretching from London to Swansea and from Somerset to Birmingham. The warning will be in force from 9am on Wednesday until 9pm on Thursday.

Temperatures could come close to the UK’s all-time record of 40.3C, recorded in July 2022.
