Runner dies during ultramarathon known for extreme difficulty

A participant in the 253-mile Cocodona 250 ultramarathon in Arizona died after experiencing a serious medical emergency on the high-altitude course.
Race organizers, Aravaipa Running, confirmed the death but withheld the runner‘s identity and specific details, citing respect for the family.
The Cocodona 250 is known for its extreme difficulty, featuring approximately 38,791 feet of elevation gain, with the route ascending to over 9,000 feet.
Despite the tragedy, organizers announced that the race would continue in the runner’s honor, asking participants to carry their memory on the trail.
This incident occurs amid broader concerns regarding safety in ultramarathon running, following other reported deaths in similar endurance events.
