The RSPCA has issued an urgent plea to the public asking them for help. The animal welfare charity has appealed to anyone considering getting a new pet.
Sharing a message for cat lovers, the RSPCA urged people to ‘choose to adopt’. The plea comes after the charity said it has responded to over 6,000 incidents involving cats since May, with the RSPCA currently facing its busiest time of the year. In a Facebook post, the charity said its services are facing ‘immense pressure.’
The RSPCA explained: “We’re in the midst of Kitten Season – and we need your help. Kitten season is our busiest time of year, putting our rehoming centres and branches under immense pressure as thousands of vulnerable young cats and kittens enter our care.
“The cat crisis is growing, with cat-related incidents rising by 49% year-on-year. Since May alone, our teams have already recorded over 6,300 cat-related incidents so far. If you’re considering welcoming a new feline friend into your home, please choose to adopt.
“By giving a rescue cat a second chance, you can help free up vital space for the next animal in urgent need.” Animal lovers can find a rescue pet on the charity’s website.

In the post, the RSPCA explained why kitten season puts a burden on animal rehoming services. “‘Kitten season’ is when most kittens are born in the year. From spring to autumn, rescues see a huge increase in the number of pregnant cats and kittens coming into their care,” the charity shared.
“From abandoned litters to pregnant felines rescued from cruelty and neglect, our centres feel the full effect of kitten season, putting a huge strain on our resources. Since May, 6,308 cat-related incidents have already been recorded.
“Not many people are aware that female cats can get pregnant as young as four months old. To help tackle the cat crisis and prevent unwanted litters, we urge cat owners to neuter their pets. For anyone thinking about bringing a cat into their lives, please consider adopting. Every cat rehomed creates space for another in need.”

More information about adoption is available on the RSPCA website. The charity says: “Once you’ve found a cat you’re interested in, you can apply to adopt a cat or rehome a kitten from the RSPCA.
“Our teams review each application carefully to make sure you can meet the cat’s needs, and you should hear back within 48 hours. If the cat you applied for isn’t suitable for your home, we’ll help you find another cat who may be a better fit. Some cats are ready to be rehomed immediately, so make sure you’re ready too.”
