Robert De Niro admitted he never expected his Oscar-nominated film Taxi Driverto become the lasting success it did, stating he never approaches a project anticipating it to be a hit.
De Niro, who received his second Oscar nomination for his lead role in the 1976 Martin Scorsese drama, believes that a film’s success is ultimately “out of your control.”
Taxi Driver garnered four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, but did not win any major awards, with screenwriter Paul Schrader suggesting its controversial nature was a factor.
Schrader also revealed that Columbia Pictures was initially surprised by the film’s commercial and critical success, having considered it an “outlier” without significant marketing efforts.
Jodie Foster, who was 12 when she starred opposite De Niro, recounted his intense method acting during filming and how his explanation of his process helped her understand character development.
